CONCEPT:
A comparison of fashionable war clothing of the early modern era with everyday military fashion. My work examines Landsknecht fashion and the current War-Core fashion phenomenon.
Landsknechte had their heyday in the 15th century. The mercena- ries from german speaking countries wore extremely impractical clothing for military service: magnificent feathers and expensive silks whose exact origin has not yet been clarified. Landsknecht fashion could develop its extravagance and desire because Landsknechte were excluded from the medieval dress codes.
As a result, their „Schlitztracht“ (clothing from cut fabric) had a significant fashion influence. Cut, fanciful, boastful clothing. The dress was cut open at tight-fitted places and lined with lighter fa- brics of a different color, mostly silk. The more fashionable and wealthy the wearer was, the more material oozed out of the outer garment. The medieval fashion phenomenon was partly due to the plague epidemic. The plague drastically reduced the population in Europe, and the survivors suddenly had more capital to invest in luxury goods such as fashion.
A fashion trend as a reaction to an epidemic is fascina- ting to me concerning the background of the Corona crisis. Landsknecht fashion can be described as fashionable war clothing, whereas War-Core can be seen as highly functional everyday fashion.
War-Core represents fashion inspired by military action clothing as a current fashion phenomenon. It is a fashionable example of an over-equipment trend that can also be observed in other areas of life (all kinds of gear, SUVs...). A foreshadowing of an undesirable prepper future. Both are widespread fashion phenomena due to the media of their time. The first printing techniques emerged in the 15th century, which had a significant impact on the populari- ty of Landsknecht fashion. Social media and video games heavily influence War-Core. I‘m also exploring an idealized state of nature that finds expression in both phenomena.
